The more successful burglars become, the more confident they grow. However, they tend to overlook the fact that one day they will target the wrong home.
Gwendolyn Agard, a grandmother from Jackson County, taught a burglar a valuable lesson when a 20-year-old intruder broke into her house wielding a rubber mallet. In a precarious situation, Gwendolyn, an elderly woman with no immediate assistance nearby, had to act swiftly.
Without succumbing to fear, she dialed 911, her voice trembling with apprehension. But Gwendolyn was not the type to cower in fear. She was prepared for such situations and had firearms in her possession.
Fortuitously, Gwendolyn owned both a .38 and a .45 caliber pistol. While most people hope to never use them, Gwendolyn kept them precisely for situations like this.
Moreover, it’s safe to say that Gwendolyn issued a clear warning. Just before the intruder entered her home, she boldly proclaimed her plan, laden with profanity. According to Gwendolyn, her exact words were, “Motherf*****, if you come in here you’re a dead son of a b****.” Her resolute demeanor and unyielding confidence undoubtedly left an impression on the intruder.

To add an extra layer of peculiarity to the situation, the intruder was completely naked, as confirmed by Gwendolyn herself. It was a brazen display of audacity.
Undeterred by the warning shots fired from her .38 revolver, the intruder proceeded upstairs to rummage through her belongings. Gwendolyn realized it was time to get serious. She readied her .45 revolver and simultaneously called 911, urgently pleading for their swift arrival.
While fear gripped her, Gwendolyn remained far from defenseless. In fact, it can be argued that both humans and animals are most formidable when confronted with fear.
As the intruder attempted to descend the stairs once again, Gwendolyn discharged a round from her .45 pistol. Finally, the intruder grasped the reality that Grandma Gwendolyn was not defenseless or willing to play nice.
Startled by the gunshot, he exclaimed, “Are you trying to kill me?”
Gwendolyn retorted, “Oh, you finally got the message!”
Although Gwendolyn had a firearm to aid her, she was not exempt from danger. The intruder remained a perilous stranger, and she was an elderly lady.
This nerve-racking ordeal persisted for another ten minutes. Grandma Gwendolyn reiterated that she had a clear view of the intruder. Realizing that he might be more imperiled than her, the intruder sought refuge in an upstairs closet. It seemed that the message conveyed by the .45 pistol had truly hit home.
Fortunately, authorities arrived at the conclusion of those nerve-wracking ten minutes, ultimately apprehending the naked intruder.
Gwendolyn recounted her experience to 11Alive, stating, “I don’t know what his intention was, but I know what mine was.”
How could a 79-year-old woman exhibit such audacity and readiness to fight back? Well, she had something worth living for. Gwendolyn explained, “I thought, ‘I couldn’t die without my children.’ And, I just got this burst of energy.”
We can all breathe a sigh of relief that Gwendolyn emerged unscathed, and undoubtedly, her grandchildren are even more elated.
